Suzuki Gsx-r1000/r L7 & L8: Drive Chain May Stretch Come Off Or Break

Recall Summary Suzuki is recalling 1,340 GSX-R1000/R L7 and L8 motorcycles because a transmission control issue can cause the drive chain to stretch, come off, or break. If a rider misses second gear during upshifting and the engine revs high before shifting into gear, excessive force can be applied to the chain. Suzuki will replace the engine control module and inspect or replace the drive chain if needed.

Product
Vehicles: SUZUKI GSX-R1000/R L7 & L8. Units affected: 1,340
Reason
When upshifting between first and second gear if the rider fails to engage second gear a neutral condition will exist continued opening of the throttle will cause high engine RPM. If the rider shifts in to second gear without disengaging the clutch under the very high RPM condition an excess load can be applied to the powertrain. This could cause the drive chain to stretch and in the worst case the drive chain could come off or break. Remedy: Replace ECM. Inspect drive chain if free play is detected replace drive chain assembly.
