Hill’s Pet Nutrition Recalls A Range Of Its Selected Dog Food Because It May Contain High Levels Of Vitamin D
Hill's Pet Nutrition is recalling five dog food products sold in the United Kingdom because they may contain high levels of vitamin D. Dogs eating these products over an extended period could develop health problems including vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, and in severe cases, kidney dysfunction. This recall affects owners of the recalled Prescription Diet and Science Plan dog food lines.
- Recalling firm
- Hill’s Pet Nutrition
- Product
- Products: Prescription Diet Canine i/d; Prescription Diet Canine w/d; Science Plan Canine Mature Adult Active Longevity Chicken; Science Plan Canine Advance Adult Fitness Chicken; Prescription Diet Canine z/d.
- Reason
- High levels of vitamin D fed to a pet over a short period (weeks/months) should not cause concern. Over a longer period of feeding, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure, and dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Vitamin D, when consumed at very high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction.
