Mercedes Benz Slk: Brakes May Overheat Creating A Risk Of Smoke And/or Fire

Recall Summary Mercedes-Benz is recalling approximately 12,920 SLK and SLC vehicles due to faulty Electronic Stability Program software that can cause brake system pressure to drop, leading the brakes to overheat and potentially catch fire in the wheel housing. The vehicles affected are those distributed in the United Kingdom. Mercedes-Benz will update the ESP software to fix the issue.

Product
Vehicles: MERCEDES BENZ SLK, MERCEDES BENZ SLC. Units affected: 12,920
Reason
The software for the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is faulty. The fault could lead to a low residual pressure in the hydraulic system so the brakes are applied and gain heat. This increased heat will apply the brakes further and could adversely affect the brake fluid. Fire in the wheel housing cannot be ruled out. Remedy: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected and update the software for the ESP.
