BMW 7 Series: Rear Axle Carrier May Fail

BMW is recalling approximately 3,990 vehicles from the 7, 6, and 5 Series models because defects in the rear axle carrier may cause it to fail during normal driving. If the rear axle carrier fails while the vehicle is moving, it could cause unexpected changes in how the vehicle handles and potentially lead to an accident. Affected vehicles will be inspected and have the rear axle carrier replaced if necessary.

Product
Vehicles: BMW 7 SERIES, BMW 6 SERIES, BMW 5 SERIES. Units affected: 3,990
Reason
It has been identified that defects in a material joint may have resulted during the heat treatment of individual components of the rear axle carrier. This may result in failure of the holders of the links and struts even under normal driving conditions. Should the holder of a link fail whilst the vehicle is in motion the handling characteristics of the vehicle would undergo an unexpected change which could result in an accident. Remedy: Recalled vehicles will be checked and if necessary fitted with a quality assured rear axle carrier.
