Infiniti Qx30: Driver's Airbag May Deploy

Infiniti QX30 and Q30 Airbag Recall Infiniti is recalling 9,940 QX30 and Q30 vehicles because the steering column lacks a proper electrical ground connection beyond the spiral cable. If the spiral cable becomes damaged and the warning light is ignored, an electrostatic discharge could potentially trigger unintended deployment of the driver's airbag. The fix involves installing a slip ring on the steering column.

Vehicles: Infiniti QX30, Infiniti Q30. Units affected: 9,940
Reason
The steering column has no electrical connection to ground other than the spiral cable. In the event that the spiral cable is damaged the airbag warning light will illuminate. If the customer ignores the warning light and continues to drive for extended periods electrostatic charge may be discharged through the electrical circuit of the drivers airbag. In an extreme case this discharge could be sufficient to trigger an unintended deployment of the driver airbag. Remedy: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected and fit a slip ring to the steering column on all potentially affected...
