BMW 5 Series: Steering Rack Might Lock

BMW is recalling 3 units of the 5 Series due to a potential steering rack defect where an incorrectly fitted retaining ring could cause the sealing cap to move, which may result in the steering locking up and requiring excessive force to turn. This affects BMW 5 Series vehicles distributed in the United Kingdom. BMW will replace the steering rack and reprogram it to fix the issue.

Vehicles: BMW 5 SERIES. Units affected: 3
Reason
If the retaining ring inside the steering gear has not been fitted correctly the sealing cap would not be fixed axially and might start moving. If the sealing cap has moved the ball return channel would not be fixed anymore and might move out of position possibly resulting in a ball jam accompanied by an extensively increased steering force and possibly lock. Remedy: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to fit a new steering rack and ensure it is programmed correctly.
