- (1) The ball joint where the steering column double joint is centred can jump out of its socket. (2) The retaining plates for the ball joint in the upper universal joint in the steering column may work loose and obstruct free rotation of the column. (3) The steering column support bracket fasteners may not have been tightened to the specified torque. Remedy: (1) Check the production date of the jointed steering shaft and fit a quality assured replacement where necessary. (2) Check the rivets securing the retaining plates.
