BMW 4 Series: Software Fault With Crankshaft Sensor

BMW Recall Summary BMW is recalling approximately 92,575 vehicles across multiple models (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 Series, X1, X2, and Mini models) due to a software fault in the crankshaft sensor that prevents it from properly reading engine signals. When the sensor fails to process signals correctly, the engine may run roughly, lose power (reducing to 70% capacity), display a "check engine" warning, or in some cases stall while driving. The fix involves replacing the affected crankshaft sensor with a corrected version.

Product
Vehicles: BMW 4 SERIES, BMW 5 SERIES, BMW 6 SERIES, BMW MINI, BMW X2, BMW 3 SERIES, BMW MINI Countryman, BMW 2 SERIES, BMW 1 SERIES, BMW 7 SERIES, BMW X1. Units affected: 92,575
Reason
The affected vehicles may be equipped with a crankshaft sensor with a software fault. The crankshaft sensor cannot process the signal values from the crankshaft transmitter due to an improper firmware level. The firmware does not compensate sufficiently the temperature gradients and the magnetic field strength of the sensor electronic. If the crankshaft sensor cannot process the signal values from the transmitter the Digital Diesel Electronic (DDE) will notice that and change to the emergency operation mode. The emergency mode will be displayed by the check control message engine...
