Mercedes Benz E Class: Risk Of Fire

Recall Summary Mercedes-Benz is recalling 26 E-Class vehicles with 6 or 8-cylinder engines because a faulty rear engine compartment panel may be positioned too close to the left exhaust catalytic converter. Under heavy driving conditions, the hot catalytic converter could ignite the panel, creating a fire risk. Dealers will inspect the clearance and replace the panel if needed.

Reason
On certain 6 and 8 cylinder engine vehicles a faulty rear engine compartment panel/bulkhead may have been installed. It is therefore possible that the panel/bulkhead may contact the left exhaust catalytic converter due to insufficient clearance. If the catalytic converter is subjected to high temperatures due to heavy driving conditions i.e. full throttle or towing then there is a risk of the rear engine compartment panel igniting and a vehicle fire ensuing. Remedy: Recall all affected vehicles to inspect the clearance between the rear engine compartment panel/bulkhead and the exhaust...
